The makers of Weruva cat food describe their product as “elegant and sumptuous”, and visually, inside and outside the can, I’d say that’s accurate. Like its sister brand BFF, Weruva is one of those new luxury brands coming at you with adorable packaging and even cuter names for the formulas inside. I will fully admit to being an easy mark for almost anything in cute, colorful packaging, which makes me really appreciate this new wave of “pretty” pet food. Those cans that look like medicine never made me swoon in the pet store aisles. Weruva is mid-range priced, in comparison with other grain-free lines.
But it’s not all clever marketing, Weruva is quality human grade food for cats produced in a human food facility using antibiotic-free and hormone-free meat. You can see the real, natural meat texture in the can. This is “Peking Ducken”, one of the favorites around here. It’s chicken and duck – and that’s precisely what it looks like!
Most, but not all, of the Weruva cat food line is grain free. Unfortunately, Weetzie’s absolute favorite, “Asian Fusion” (tuna, rice and anchovies) falls into the not grain-free category, so it’s not part of the regular meal rotation. Weetzie is a big seafood fan, so she’s also very enamored of Weruva’s “Mack & Jack” (Mackerel and Skipjack tuna) and “Mideast Feast” (Tuna and Tilapia).
Pixie doesn’t really have a favorite food, of any brand or meat type. She loves most food equally – except vegetables. Were she human, this would be sad and unfortunate. But she’s a cat, an obligate carnivore, and therefore doesn’t need any vegetables in her diet at all. A lot of the Weruva formulas contain cat-bite-sized pieces of carrot or large whole green peas. As the cats don’t need them, they’re clearly added to visually appeal to us humans – and it works. I look at the peas and carrots and think their meal looks homey, nourishing, and comforting. The cats have other opinions. I’ll often come back to their dishes and find all the meat gone, and some sad and lonely pieces of carrot remaining. Or a clean bowl with two shiny whole green peas. The peas are VERY unpopular around here, and they seem to be the ONE thing on the planet that Pixie won’t eat – and this from a cat who regularly eats lint and dust bunnies. (Though I’ve discovered if I mash up the peas, Pixie will eat them without issue. Sort of like how they say you can hide veggies in your kid’s food by throwing them in the blender first. But, again, Pixie doesn’t NEED to eat the peas.)
Our cats thoroughly enjoy Weruva, and I feel good about serving it to them, but they don’t get quite as excited about it as they do some of the other grain free cat food brands we serve them regularly. (Maybe it’s the veg?)

We haven’t heard of that brand – it sounds like it would be a good option to try though. And it looks like real food which is always nice (at least to me it is).
Me too! It’s too bad that more often than not something labeled “chicken” doesn’t really resemble chicken.
This food is a little expensive but I figure, I don’t have any kids so it’s okay. My Oiler doesn’t need school clothes, crayons, rides, or piano lessons so a little luxury food is definitely appropriate. He has the most beautiful coat, and all my friends comment on this when they see him. I have been feeding him this since he was 6 months old and I don’t feed him any other wet food. He is always EXTREMELY excited when the cans pop open and has maintaned a very healthy weight and energy.
I like your cat/kid logic! Cat toys are WAY less expensive than kid toys, too. A beautiful coat, a healthy weight, no extra vet visits, and a happy cat = totally worth a little extra cost, imho. Thanks for commenting!
Just tried Weruva for the first time. Mack and Jack, and Grandma’s Chicken Soup went over very well, but NONE of my three will even try Peking Ducken. All three just walk away when they smell it, so I recommend that you only buy one can of any variety at a time, as one cat’s meat…
Wow, all three? That seems like a clear message!
I agree. Any time we try something new it’s one can at a time. Though only of ours is a fussy eater. The other eats first and thinks about it later.
Our mom wanted us to eat better and she said she did lots of research to find something yummy and good for us. She bought us a sampling of many flavors from Weruva and Merrick. We are sort of picky and really love TUNA! But we gave them all a fair try. Sort of. We could barely stand a single bite of any of the Merrick flavors. But Weruva?! Hallelujah! We loved almost every one that Mom bought. Our most favorites are Mideast Feast, Mediterranean Harvest, Polynesian BBQ, Outback Grill, and Paw Lickin’ Chicken (in that order
However, we did not prefer Mack and Jack surprisingly (one part was yucky).
Our cats would have happily eaten the leftover Mack and Jack for you two – it’s a big hit around here!
If you love tuna you should check out BFF sometime. Most of them are tuna based.
I received a couple of cans of the Paw Lickin’ Chicken Flavor for my two silver shaded Persian kittens. They LOVE this stuff. They are still kittens, so I’m not ready to give this to them all the time, but it’s definitely something I’ll consider feeding them. The only problem is the price, but as I read on another review, I think of the money I’ve thrown down the drain that they wouldn’t eat.
This food is lovely. Fresh.. exciting to my cat friend.. I call it his ‘in his mouth food ‘ after urinary crystal problems I needed to incorporate more wet food into his kitty diet.. and man has this been a hit. It dose not make him stinky either.. I love the freshness…. sure I suppose I could spend less / but why?
