We feed our cats wet food, twice a day. Usually grain-free, though sometimes a little grain slips through in the name of variety and research. We like to mix it up, and when new flavors or brands show up at the pet store, I like to investigate.
So, I figured why not report back here?
First, let’s explain our cat’s eating styles and food preferences.
Pixie LOVES to eat. She is not a picky eater, and generally likes to consume everything in her bowl in one go. When the bowl is empty, she’ll try out anything she finds on the floor. Pieces of lint, dirt tracked in from outside, any old kind of residue. It’s all tastable as far as Pixie is concerned. She has no preference for any particular kind of food, brand, kind of meat, or texture.
Weetzie is not all that excited about food. She’s a grazer. She’s fussy, and has clear likes (seafood, smooth paste consistency) and dislikes (beef, vegetable pieces, big meat chunks). I think in Weetzie’s perfect world she would be presented with a small bite of fresh seafood paste in gravy every hour or so. A cat sized amuse-bouche. Sorry Weetz, not going to happen!
So, last week we tried out Felidae Grain Free Salmon canned formula. Felidae is quite a bit less expensive than the other “premium” canned foods, though the label doesn’t indicate it being of any lesser quality.
The texture struck me as a little odd when I was taking their first portion out of the can. It had a pumpkin puree type feel to it. Or maybe a salmon mousse? I’m not sure what ingredient or combination of them was causing this texture, but it’s the first time I’ve encountered it in a canned cat food. It does make me wonder about the starch levels. Because cats don’t really need potatoes any more than they need grains, right?
So how did the cats like it?
Well… it’s a rare occurrence, but Pixie did not finish her meal.
And even stranger, Weetzie seemed to like it considerably more than her sister. Though, she also did not finish.
So, I guess that means we’re going to have to give this one two paws down. Sorry Felidae!

Pixie sounds like my Cody and Weetzie sounds like my Bobo was (a grazer) but Cody will eat anything and everything not glued down.
I forgot, where do you live? I have never heard of that cat food…….any nutritionists out there that can comment on it?

I’m in Toronto, Canada. Just checked and it looks like Felidae is Californian.
Just an fyi…this company seems to be having some issues with their pet food line- check out consumer complaints….
